So living in a big city like New York has numerous advantages, and one of them is the amount of press one can get just by being local. My first bit of press was an ad for Venus Modern Body Arts in Drummer Magazine. Drummer was, unbeknownst to me, a leather daddy magazine. I posed fully nude for the ad in a sensitive, innocent pose. When I saw that ad I laughed my ass off, I wish I had a copy of that one! After that I was in numerous international tattoo magazines, a Swedish newspaper, a Spanish travel magazine, Time Magazine Japan, a book on the history of photography, and The New York Times on three different occasions. My only spot of local fame was The Willamette Week voted best piercing shop of Portland.
For the screen I started with a Nina Hagen video (European release only but I saw it when I was in Amsterdam), Montel Williams for being a representative for “Generation X”, Talk Soup - teasing me about the Montel show, Rikki Lake twice for shock value to blind dates, ESPN interviewed by some BMX guy named Rip Torn. I was on MSNBC for a body art special, VH1 for a video critique but they edited the shit out of me for intelligently putting down what they were trying to sell. I was on heavy rotation on MTV for a Capitol Records ad (good pay!), The Travel Channel for a body-art special, The Sci-Fi Channel for being a Star Wars geek, The Learning Channel for another body-art special, my most favorite program I did was The Discovery Channel when they took me to Ethiopia (Discovery also labeled me “The Poster Boy of Body Art”). Oh yeah, and two Bouncing Souls videos (I was friends with the band). One thing I wish I accepted was The John Stewart Show, but I actually turned it down.
Other than the Africa trip, one of my favorite opportunities was when I participated in an exhibit on body art at The Museum of Natural History in New York. Not only was my picture featured in the museum for a season, but I was also helping the staff with resources and pitching the concept to the head curator. I also got to go to the opening party and run around the museum drunk after hours.
Here are some clippings from the various magazines I've been in over the years. Click on thumbnails to enlarge, then click in the upper right or left corner of the enlarged picture for "next" or "previous" image.
